Saturday’s Champions<\/span><\/h3>\n
\n

On a cold and blustery Saturday, the finals of two major events took place here at Rossdale. Both matches were close fought affairs played in good spirit.<\/p>\n

The Jean Macdonald Cup was tight all day, with both pairs being square after the first nine. However the experience of Ann-Maree McCue and Judith Davis eventually overcame the energetic Bernadette Terrell and Cheryl Disher with a 2 and 1 win on the 17th hole.<\/p>\n

The young and the not so young pairing of James Hynes and Rab Wallace took on father and son pair of (not so young and young) Frank Linford and Nick Linford for one of the premier events at Rossdale, the Winter Cup.\u00a0 Though the scores were tight, Frank and Nick held sway for the most part of the match. However James and Rab fought back from being 2 down after nine and 1 down coming up the 18th, to force the match onto the 19th hole. The match went no further as James and Rab proved victorious on the first extra hole.<\/p>\n

Bernadette Terrell walked away with some amazing prizes and was crowned Runner Up in the Ladies 35-59 A Grade Division on the big stage at Centara Grand Beach Resort Hua Hin. With stableford rounds of 30pts, 32pts, 35pts & 35pts combining for a total of 132pts across 4 tournament rounds. Seriously good championship courses, headlined by Black Mountain and Banyan, have seen Hua Hin voted Asia’s Best Golf Destination at the World Golf Awards. Junior Grading Day<\/span><\/h2>\n

Many who play on a Thursday or Saturday would notice the large group of kids attending Willow’s Junior Clinics. They are all aged between 5 and 12 years old.
\nOn the last Saturday of each School Term, they all gather for Grading Day. All the kids hit 10 shots in each of the 5 disciplines set out on the day which is then followed by a sausage sizzle and presentations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n

On Saturday 23rd June, Grading Day was held with 28 students trying to achieve a Certificate and Cap for reaching their next level with 8 kids achieving a Certificate on the day. The below passage from Willow’s Facebook post after the event shows how much it means to both the kids and Willow.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n

‘One young man had hit his first 3 shots of the day terribly and was crying. I approached him to try and help him focus and relax. The next 2 shots were just as bad. He wanted it so bad that failing hurt. His head was down and even though he was trying his best, he wasn’t focused. Before the 6th shot, we stopped for a moment… I asked him to focus on one certain thing and show me how good I know he is. The tears stopped, he nodded and the glare began. That determined look was in his eye. The last 5 went straight through the goals perfectly. I’ve never been prouder as a coach than I am of this young man today. I think I was more excited than he was (or at least showed). Today was a great day!’<\/p>\n

We have a great group of kids and parents currently involved in the program, as well as a number of volunteers. We also thank members for their understanding if there is a little more noise each week during the clinic times. House Committee Member\u00a0Wanted!<\/span><\/h2>\n

Dear Members,\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0Your House committee is seeking a new member! The House Committee is one of several committees that operate in conjunction with the Board and the Rossdale Operations Team. We have a number of upcoming major projects and events, and we would love another member to join our team and assist. Our focus over the coming 12 months will be: Change Room upgrades, Corporate Cup, Rossdale 70th Anniversary Event, Melbourne Cup Day, Live at the Green, and management and coordination of the club social calendar. Your involvement would include a monthly meeting, usually held in a local establishment to monitor the competition and ensure a relaxed environment. You will be allocated responsibility for one of our major initiatives, and you will be asked for your input into all House Committee activities. The person we need is someone willing to roll up theirs sleeves and get things done. An interest in Food and Beverage activities is a plus, and some past business experience would be helpful but not a necessity. Ultimately we just want someone that can work in a team, and is prepared to help. The Food and Beverages part of our business has made a huge turnaround under the stewardship of Andrew, Megan, Gerard, Glenys, Carol and teams. Report on Royal Selangor Golf Club Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.<\/span><\/h2>\n

On a recent trip to Malaysia, I had the good fortune to spend a morning being shown around the Royal Selangor Golf club in Kuala Lumpur.<\/p>\n

Royal Selangor Golf Club,<\/p>\n

– Was set up by the British in 1893.<\/p>\n

– Consists of two 18 hole golf courses<\/p>\n

– Plus a 9 hole Par 3 course,<\/p>\n

– 7 grass tennis courts,<\/p>\n

– 3 hard tennis courts and<\/p>\n

– 2 swimming pools.<\/p>\n

With security armed with rifles manning the front gate, it is a very exclusive club and strictly open to members only,<\/p>\n

In 2016, RSGC hosted the Maybank Championship, a European tour event won by Australia’s Marcus Fraser.<\/p>\n

Jack Cheong, the course superintendent of 11 years, (affectionately known as Mr. Jack) was very friendly and kindly showed me around for the morning.<\/p>\n

The golf course playing surfaces varied from<\/p>\n

– Carpet grass (Axonopus Spp.)\u00a0<\/i>in the rough and under trees,\u00a0<\/p>\n

– Seashore paspalum (\u00a0Paspalum vaginatum)\u00a0<\/i>in the immediate rough,<\/p>\n

– Zoysia (Zoysia japonica)<\/i>\/seashore paspalum\/couch (cynodon dactylon<\/i>) mix on tees and fairways<\/p>\n

– Tifeagle (a hybrid cynodon dactylon)\u00a0<\/i>greens<\/p>\n

For those of you recently back from Thailand, you will be familiar with these grasses, but others may not as they do not perform well in Victoria with our often chilly winters.<\/p>\n

With a budget of 7,000,000 RM ($2.5 mil) and staff of 100 working 6 \u00c3?\u00c2\u00bd days a week it was a very busy place to visit indeed.<\/p>\n

Situated in the heart of Kuala Lumpur the 300 acre site believed to be valued in the vicinity of at least 2 billion RM (+$700 million).<\/p>\n

Quirky fact\u00a0<\/b>Mr. Jack has 1,500 RM a year to spend on feeding the local monkeys. If not fed the monkeys begin to remove tee marker, flag-sticks, tear the cloth of flag-sticks and even attack members!! Money well spent<\/p>\n
