Hi all. This week was the last round of home and away fixtures for our Juniors. This shaped as a must win rubber if we were to be any chance of playing finals. I must, firstly thank the Kew golf club for agreeing to move their home game to Rossdale, due to their course conditions.
On a, finally, sunny day off we went. At 1, Toby Coleridge. Toby was (almost) always in control and we walked away with a 3/2 win. One in the bank.
Next, our leader, Sam. Sam’s match was hard fought and the lead was constantly changing. Unfortunately, Sam went down, 3/2
This week saw Cam Gatt back in the team and, after going down early, Cam showed his fighting capabilities in nearly getting the match back. It was not to be and Cam lost 2/1
Jack Ilott played the next match. Jack has been steadfast all season and showed it again. A solid 2/1 win
Our number 6 match saw Elijah playing and he ended up with a clear 4/3 result.
At this point it was 3 wins for us and 2 for Kew.
Our Number 5 Match saw Matilda fighting all day against a very steady opponent. Just down or square all day. It was a nervous wait as the match came down 18. Was there a chance of a positive result? After a brave shot from the shrubbery, Matilda knocked a putt to a couple of feet. Her opponent had played a chip to a little bit over the back of the green. His putt slid past and after sinking his second, Matilda had her putt to win the hole and the match. I think everyone watching was doing all the shaking for Matilda, because she nervelessly sank the putt for an epic win.
4/2 for Rossdale and then to wait and see if Woodlands won. They were beaten and so a top finish for our team and finals await. I dare say, I’m not alone in being pleased and privileged to be part of this great group of young members.
As usual I cannot finish without some thanks. Firstly to Mike and the pro shop staff for all the background work that makes me look efficient, to Trav and the ground staff, who managed to get the course in a playable condition, to Vi and Brooke in the clubhouse, thanks for waiting and providing snacks for the teams. To all the members who gave of their time on a Sunday afternoon to come and watch. I think the sheer number of you gave Kew a hell of a fright, I can’t thank you enough. Finally, the caddies. To Paul, Jimmy, John, Kev, Karen and Jason. Your help and advice has aided our team all year. We could not do this without you and I, for one, appreciate every last second of the help you give.
I’ll keep you posted about the finals and thanks.
Cheers, The Manager
