History
Rossdale Golf Club Limited Est. 1949
Rossdale
Golf Club was established in June 1949, but the course itself dates back to the
early 1920's when Ivo Whitten designed the layout, adjacent to the Aspendale
Race Track. The course opened as a private golf club known as the Australasian
Golf Club in 1928, but owing to financial problems caused by the depression,
the club was dissolved with the course becoming public.
In
1948, negotiations began between a small group of regular players and the owner
of the land Rupert Vernon Hicks Ross and on the 6th of June 1949,
Rossdale Golf Club Limited was born.
With
any new club there were teething problems with both course and clubhouse. The
course required major works to fairways and greens and with a lack of quality
water available in the area so the club's first curator Bill Barlow reversed
the layout to maximize the use of the natural flora. The clubhouse was the
original homestead on the property which has been developed and added to
throughout the club's history.
Rossdale
Golf Club has a rich tradition of breeding junior golfers culminating in the
success of Bradley Hughes who has twice won the Australian Masters. The club
also twice hosted the Australian PGA Championship in the 1960's.
Ensuring
the survival of Rossdale Golf Club's course has been a major strategic plan
over the past ten years. The club proudly boasts over 30 megalitres of water
storage above ground and 10 megalitres storage below ground within an aquifer.
All water is captured storm water thus fulfilling the club's commitment to
water conservation.
Over
the years Rossdale Golf Club has had a number of ups and downs, but the fierce
determination of its members to keep Rossdale at its current location has seen
the club flourish to become one of Melbourne's premier golfing destinations and
most of all "Melbourne's Friendliest Golf Club"
